worth/worthwhile/worthyの違い

"worth" "worthwhile " "worthy"

この３つの形容詞ですが、意味合いがそれぞれ違くてややこしいので簡単に違いをまとめてみました。

まずは前回の記事でも書いた"worth"です。

これは単純に、「その物や事自体に価値がある」時に使います。

例文

This used car is worth 5000 dollars.

"worth"は文法的にも特殊なので、詳しくは別記事をご覧下さい。

次に"worthwhile"です。

これは「やりがいがある、時間・金・労力をかける価値がある」という意味合いで使います。

例文

My job is worthwhile.

It's worthwhile to read this book.(仮主語it +toV)

＝It's worthwhile reading this book.(仮主語it＋-ing)

また、worth one's whileという言い方もあり、これもworthwhileと同じで「〜の時間、〜の労力」といった意味があります。

例文

This job isn't worth my while.

最後に"worthy"です。"worthy"は「〜にふさわしい、〜に値する」という意味合いです。(ネガティブな意味にも使えます。) 動詞のdeserveでも言い換えができます。

例文 

You are worthy of praise.

＝You deserve praise.

The crime is worthy of the death penalty.

＝The crime deserves the death penalty.

He is worthy of winning the tournament.

＝△He is worthy to win the tournament. →to不定詞の副詞的用法(文法的に間違えではないが、of -ingで言う方が一般的)

＝He deserves to win the tournament.

【worthy of 名詞】という形はセットで覚えましょう。

"worthwhile " "worthy"は普通の形容詞なので、もちろん名詞を修飾する形(限定用法)でも使えます。

例文

This is a worthwhile job.

He is a worthy opponent.
