“if possible”などの副詞節の慣用的な省略

副詞節〈接続詞＋S＋be動詞〉の 〈S＋be動詞〉は主語が主節の主語と同じ時省略できるというルールは前回説明致しました。

ex)

When (I was) young, I would often go fishing.

しかし、主語が一致していないにも関わらず省略されるパターンがあります。

ex)

If (it is) possible, can you talk about that in the next meeting?

これは英語も日本語同様、繰り返さなくても理解できたり、なくても理解できる場合、省略して簡潔な文にすることができるからです。

こういうケースは慣用的にいくつか決まっているのでパターンとして覚えましょう。

if possible(もし可能なら) / if any(もしあれば/たとえあるとしても【数量】) / if ever(たとえあるとしても) 【頻度】/ if anything(どちらかといえば) / if so(もしそうなら) / is not(もしそうじゃなければ) / however hard(どんなに大変でも)

ex)

Correct mistakes, if any.

There are few, if any, mistakes in his composition.

He seldom, if ever, goes to the cinema.

He is, if anything, the romantic type.

Do you have any ideas? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

You'll cook tonight. If not you'll get some food.

Don't give up however hard.

if any, if ever, if anything に関しては、省略されているのがbe動詞ですらなくthere is構文になりますが、慣用的表現として暗記してしまいましょう。
